We have helpers in PythonOps called MakeByteArray and MakeString which
do the conversion. To use these from Python you can do:

import clr
clr.AddReference('IronPython')
from IronPython.Runtime.Operations import PythonOps
pickled = PythonOps.MakeString(record.data)
